When to ride Grant County

May through June and September through October are the steadiest months for a long Grant County ride. Summer riding works early, and winter depends on whether the manager has cleared snow and ice.

Wisconsin eBike laws and route permission

Wis. Stat. 340.01(15ph) defines an electric bicycle as a bicycle with fully operative pedals and an electric motor of 750 watts or less. Class 1 assists only while the rider is pedaling and ceases at 20 miles per hour. Class 2 may be powered solely by the motor and is not capable of providing assistance at 20 miles per hour. Class 3 assists only while the rider is pedaling and ceases at 28 miles per hour.

Wis. Stat. 346.806 says an electric bicycle and its operator have the same rights and duties as a bicycle, and are not subject to operator licensing, registration, or a certificate of title. A person may ride with the power unit in operation on a bikeway, subject to restrictions under Wis. Stat. 349.18. No person under the age of 16 years may operate a class 3 electric bicycle. A person under 16 may ride as a passenger on a class 3 electric bicycle designed to accommodate passengers.

Wis. Stat. 347.489 requires a permanent label naming the classification, the speed at which the motor ceases, and the motor wattage. An electric bicycle must meet 16 CFR Part 1512. The motor must cease when the brakes are applied or when the rider stops pedaling. No person may operate a class 3 electric bicycle unless it has a speedometer that registers speed in miles per hour. These sections do not set a statewide electric-bicycle helmet rule.

Wis. Stat. 349.18 says a municipality or county may prohibit operation, with the power unit in operation, of electric bicycles on bikeways under its jurisdiction. The department of natural resources may promulgate the same kind of rule. Trail access remains manager-specific.
