Things to do on an eBike in Westerly, Rhode Island

Westerly sits in the far southwestern corner of Rhode Island, on the Pawcatuck River where the state meets Connecticut. Downtown is granite -- the town was a serious granite quarrying centre, and the stone shows in the buildings and in Wilcox Park beside Main Street.

But the reason to bring a bike is the coast. Westerly's shoreline runs several miles from the Connecticut line east to Weekapaug, and almost all of it is flat.

Watch Hill and Napatree Point

Watch Hill is the village at the southwestern tip -- a small harbour, shingled summer houses, the Flying Horse Carousel, and Watch Hill Lighthouse out on the point. It is roughly six miles from downtown on coastal road and it is the classic Westerly ride.

Napatree: a mile-and-a-half of sand between Block Island Sound and Little Narragansett Bay.

West of the village, Napatree Point curls out as a narrow sand spit between Block Island Sound and Little Narragansett Bay. It is a privately owned conservation area managed for wildlife, with posted rules and seasonal restrictions protecting nesting shorebirds. Ride to Watch Hill, then check what is currently allowed before going out onto the spit -- do not assume.

Misquamicut and the beach strip

East of Watch Hill, Atlantic Avenue runs the length of Misquamicut -- Rhode Island's busiest beach strip, with a state beach at its centre. Flat, straight, and directly on the water.

The catch is season. In July and August this road is genuinely busy, with beach parking traffic in both directions. Ride it early in the morning and it is one of the best coastal stretches in New England; ride it at 2pm in August and it is a queue.

Weekapaug and the salt ponds

Keep east and the strip gives way to Weekapaug and the salt pond country. Winnapaug Pond sits behind the barrier beach, and the Weekapaug Breachway cuts through to the ocean -- a state-managed shoreline access area with its own rules and parking.

The Weekapaug end: quieter water, quieter road, better turnaround.

This is the quiet end of the Westerly shore and much the nicer place to turn around. Beyond it the coast runs on toward Charlestown and the rest of Washington County.

Because Westerly is flat and the wind is not. The whole shore is essentially level, so gradient is a non-issue -- but the exposed coastal road can carry a hard headwind one way, and assist is what turns that from a grind into a nothing. It also lets you ride the Watch Hill loop and the Weekapaug end on the same outing rather than choosing.

1. Ride the beach road early. Atlantic Avenue in August is a different road at 8am than at 2pm.
2. Check Napatree access rules before planning to ride the spit -- it is conservation land with seasonal restrictions.
3. Expect wind, not hills. Plan the outbound leg into it if you can.
4. Use Weekapaug as the turnaround, not Misquamicut, if you want quiet.
