New York eBike laws and route permission

Vehicle and Traffic Law § 102-c defines a bicycle with electric assist as a bicycle no more than 36 inches wide with an electric motor of less than 750 watts, operable pedals, and equipment meeting 16 C.F.R. Part 1512.1 et seq. Class 1 assists only while the rider is pedaling and ceases at 20 miles per hour. Class 2 may be used exclusively to propel the bicycle and is not capable of providing assistance at 20 miles per hour.
