What not to ride in Ulster County

When to ride Ulster County

May through June and September through October are the steadiest months for a long Ulster County ride. Summer riding works early, and winter depends on whether the manager has cleared snow and ice.

New York eBike laws and route permission

Vehicle and Traffic Law § 102-c defines a bicycle with electric assist as a bicycle no more than 36 inches wide with an electric motor of less than 750 watts, operable pedals, and equipment meeting 16 C.F.R. Part 1512.1 et seq. Class 1 assists only while the rider is pedaling and ceases at 20 miles per hour. Class 2 may be used exclusively to propel the bicycle and is not capable of providing assistance at 20 miles per hour. Class 3, solely within a city having a population of one million or more, may be used exclusively to propel the bicycle and is not capable of providing assistance at 25 miles per hour.

Vehicle and Traffic Law § 1242 says no person less than 16 years of age shall operate a bicycle with electric assist. No person shall operate a class 1 or class 2 bicycle with electric assist in excess of 20 miles per hour, or a class 3 bicycle with electric assist in excess of 25 miles per hour. Operation of a class 3 bicycle with electric assist outside a city having a population of one million or more is prohibited. Except as a local law provides otherwise, operation is limited to highways with a posted speed limit of 30 miles per hour or less. A sidewalk is closed unless a local law or ordinance authorizes it. A permanent label must name the class, maximum motor-assisted speed, and motor wattage. These sections do not require a Class 3 speedometer.

Vehicle and Traffic Law § 1238 says no person one or more years of age and less than 14 years of age shall operate a bicycle unless wearing a helmet, and a passenger who is five or more and less than 14 must wear a helmet. Subdivision 5-c says no person shall ride upon, propel, or otherwise operate a class three bicycle with electric assist unless that person is wearing a helmet. Trail access remains manager-specific.
