Where riders actually ride in Cumberland County

This is the quietest corner of New Jersey and the riding reflects it: flat, rural, and almost empty. Vineland was laid out in 1861 as a planned agricultural community on a grid and covers a very large area, which gives long straight farm roads in every direction. The Maurice River -- federally designated Wild and Scenic -- runs south through Millville to the Delaware Bay.

At the bottom, Port Norris and Bivalve are the old oyster ports, home to the schooner A.J. Meerwald, and East Point Lighthouse at Heislerville stands on open marsh beside one of the great shorebird stopovers on the Atlantic flyway. West, Parvin State Park adds lake and pine woods. Full breakdowns live in the county ride guide.

Where to ride in Cumberland County

.

Cumberland is flat, rural, and about as quiet as riding gets in New Jersey. The Vineland eBike shops are the main coverage in the county, and Vineland itself -- laid out on an 1861 agricultural grid over a very large area -- gives long straight farm roads with almost no traffic on them. South, the Maurice River runs down through Millville to the Delaware Bay, the old oyster ports, and East Point Lighthouse. West, Parvin State Park adds lake and pine woods. Shop coverage out here is thin, so plan service ahead. For full route plans and day itineraries, see things to do on an eBike in Cumberland County.

eBike rules in New Jersey

New Jersey treats low-speed electric bicycles -- broadly Class 1 and Class 2, pedal-assist and throttle up to 20 mph -- much like ordinary bicycles, with no license, registration, or insurance required. Faster Class 3 style machines are handled differently under state law. Most riding here is on public roads, where state law is the whole story; the exceptions are Parvin State Park, which sets its own rules on which roads and trails are open, and the wildlife management areas along the bayshore, which have their own access rules and seasonal restrictions around nesting and migration. Distances here are long and services sparse, so a long-range eBike for empty rural miles is the right tool in this county.
