Michigan eBike laws and route permission

MCL 257.13e defines an electric bicycle as a device with a seat or saddle, fully operable pedals, and an electric motor of not greater than 750 watts. Class 1 assists only while the rider is pedaling and ceases at 20 miles per hour. Class 2 may propel the bicycle whether or not the rider is pedaling, to no more than 20 miles per hour, and ceases when the brakes are applied. Class 3 assists only while the rider is pedaling and ceases at 28 miles per hour.

MCL 257.662a gives a person riding an electric bicycle the same requirements as a person riding a bicycle. A permanent label must show the classification number, the top assisted speed, and the motor wattage. A device is not an electric bicycle if the motor no longer meets MCL 257.13e, or if the motor exceeds 750 watts.

MCL 257.662a says a class 3 electric bicycle shall not be operated by an individual less than 14 years of age.
