Riley County beyond Manhattan

Riley County's shops are concentrated in one city. All 4 directory listings are in Manhattan, the county seat and the home of Kansas State University. The county also includes Ogden, Leonardville, Randolph and Riley, and Fort Riley sits partly inside the county line. We list no shops in those other places, so riders who live there travel to Manhattan for sales, service and rentals. Plan for one good trip: call first, and bring the bike's model and the symptom in writing.

County-wide, the riding we can source falls into two groups. One is the city trail network in Manhattan, with published lengths and surfaces. The other is the state park trails at Tuttle Creek. For the roads between the smaller towns we have no sourced route data, so we do not recommend a specific road. If you ride out there, judge traffic, wind and battery range yourself, and keep a reserve for the ride home.

Trails and parks across the county

The lengths below come from the City of Manhattan 2025 Bike Trail Map, the official city source. The city describes the Linear Trail as more than 9 miles circling most of Manhattan along the Kansas River, Big Blue River and Wildcat Creek, while the map prints 8.6 miles, so think of it as about 9 miles.

• Linear Park Trail: 8.6 miles on the city map, paved and gravel, rated easy, with restrooms at Fire Station 3.
• K-State Loop: 3.9 miles, paved, easy to moderate.
• Warner Park Trail: 3.0 miles, gravel and natural surface, easy to moderate.
• Manhattan River Trails: 5.5 miles, natural surface, moderate, with parking at the Linear Park trailheads. The city says these opened June 28, 2024.
• Short paved and gravel links: Anneberg Park Trail (1.9 miles, paved and gravel), Grand Mere Trail (1.6 miles, paved), McCall Road Trail (1.5 miles, paved), Denison-Marlatt Trail (1.46 miles, paved) and Northeast Park Trail (1.68 miles, gravel).
• Natural-surface trails: Washington Marlatt Trails (4.0 miles, easy to difficult) and Wildcat Creek Linear Trail (1.9 miles, moderate to difficult).

We found no trail ban on e-bikes in the city material, but surfaces vary a lot. Gravel and natural-surface trails suit a wider tire and a lower speed, and the difficult sections are a poor place to learn a new bike. Read posted signs at each trailhead.

Tuttle Creek State Park, run by the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, is at 5800A River Pond Rd in Manhattan. Its Fancy Creek Mountain Bike Trail is 6 miles, open year-round for hiking and mountain biking, and a trail permit is required. The Randolph Area Trail is 14.75 miles, multi-use and maintained by an equestrian association. Cedar Ridge (0.7 mile) and Eagle Pass (0.75 mile) are shorter options. For e-bikes, state regulation K.A.R. 115-8-13a allows electric-assisted bicycles in state parks on trails approved for bicycle use when the motor assistance stops at 20 mph. Check the posted trail signs for each trail.

eBike rules in Kansas and Riley County

Kansas sorts eBikes into three classes. Class 1 is pedal-assist up to 20 mph, Class 2 adds a throttle and also stops at 20 mph, and Class 3 is pedal-assist up to 28 mph. No license, registration or insurance is required for compliant Kansas eBikes. Class 3 operators must be at least 16, and Kansas has no statewide eBike helmet mandate. State park trails generally allow only bikes whose assistance stops by 20 mph, which in practice leaves Class 3 off affected park trails. The full breakdown is in our Kansas eBike laws guide.

Local rules sit on top of the state default. Kansas law lets a city or county restrict e-bikes on paths. In Manhattan, Ordinance 7449 treats e-assisted bicycles as micromobility devices. It bars riding on city sidewalks or plazas in the C-3 Aggieville and C-4 Downtown districts and in city parking lots and garages. On other sidewalks, yield to pedestrians, give an audible signal before passing, and stay at 15 mph or less. The city trail map adds that riding on sidewalks in Aggieville and Downtown is illegal.

We found no separate e-bike rule for Ogden, Leonardville, Randolph or Riley, or a county-wide rule from Riley County itself. The state default applies there, so check posted signs. The Kansas guide lists April through June and September through November as the easier months, since summer heat and wind are the main complaints on open prairie.

Getting service when you ride from outside Manhattan

When you phone, give the bike brand, model, motor system, approximate age and the exact symptom. Ask whether an appointment is needed and whether the part is in stock. For a rental, ask which class the bike is and whether your planned trail allows it, especially at Tuttle Creek. If a battery is swollen, leaking or unusually hot, follow the manufacturer's safety instructions and do not charge it to test the fault. Cities in Riley County

Manhattan is the only town in Riley County with directory listings. Ogden, Leonardville, Randolph and Riley have none yet, and shop owners can claim or add a listing for free. Fort Riley is partly in the county, and we do not cover base access.
