Things To Do on an eBike in Johnson County

Johnson County's sourced paved piece is short and honest: TrailLink lists a 3-mile Highway 16 Bike Path at Buffalo, plus shorter town connectors. The Bighorns above town are not a default Class 2 zone. Shop in Buffalo. Do not treat US 16 over Powder River Pass as an eBike connector to Ten Sleep.

Shop in Buffalo. Clear Creek and foothill two-track are land-manager problems. Stay on named, surfaced segments unless the current posting says otherwise.

2. Greenbelt Trail (WY) -- 2.4 miles crushed stone

TrailLink lists 2.4 miles, crushed stone, county Johnson, endpoints Klondike Drive between N. Desmet Ave. and W. Parmelee St. and US 16 and Veterans Lane. Bike and walking. Not the same surface as the 3-mile asphalt path.

TrailLink lists 3.5 miles, crushed stone, Turkey Lane just south of Highway 16 to Mosier Gulch Picnic Area. Activities: mountain biking and walking. That is foothill crushed stone, not the asphalt highway path. 31-5-707(f) still applies if the manager treats it as a trail.

6. Bighorn National Forest interior

Not the town path system. Natural-surface and motor-vehicle designations change. Do not assume e-bike access on hiking trails or on US 16 over the pass.

Half-day and full-day eBike plans

Half day, highway path (1-2 hours): The 3-mile asphalt segment out and back.

Half day, town connectors: West Fetterman plus Centennial if surfaces are dry.

Full day: Add the 2.4-mile crushed-stone greenbelt only if you packed for grit. Mentock is a separate foothill call.

Do not: eBike Powder River Pass as the plan.

What not to ride

US 16 over the Bighorns: high, exposed highway.

I-25: interstate.

Unsigned forest two-track: not the Highway 16 Bike Path.

A Sheridan connector on the interstate: drive. Sheridan Pathway Trails are the next county's 13.2 miles. A portable power station stays in the car.

When to ride Johnson County

May through October in town. Foothill crushed stone holds snow and mud later. Afternoon thunderstorms off the Bighorns. Winter is ice in Buffalo. The pass is a ski and closure problem, not an eBike season.

Use city directories for phones and claim links. The county hub keeps every card.

Wyoming eBike rules snapshot

Wyoming uses a three-class electric bicycle definition in W.S. 31-1-101(a)(xxxiv): fully operable pedals, a seat or saddle, and an electric motor of less than 750 watts. Class 1 is pedal-assist that cuts off at 20 mph. Class 2 may propel without pedaling and is not capable of assistance at 20 mph. Class 3 is pedal-assist that cuts off at 28 mph. An electric bicycle is not a motor vehicle.

Under W.S. 31-5-707, an electric bicycle operator is subject to the bicycle rights and duties in W.S. 31-5-702 and is not subject to this title's rules on financial responsibility, driver's licenses, registration, certificates of title, or off-road recreational vehicles. Manufacturers and distributors must affix a class, top assisted speed, and motor-wattage label. Do not modify speed capability without replacing that label. The motor assist must cease when you stop pedaling, apply the brakes, or disengage the motor.

W.S. 31-5-707(f) lets a local authority or state agency with jurisdiction regulate any class of electric bicycle on trails, including nonmotorized trails, under its jurisdiction. A nonmotorized trail means a natural surface made by clearing and grading native soil with no added surfacing materials. National Park Service units (Grand Teton, Yellowstone) and national forests post their own e-bike maps. Posted signs beat this page. Read our Wyoming eBike laws snapshot, then PeopleForBikes state laws, then the kiosk. Motorists must give at least three feet when passing a bicycle or electric bicycle under W.S. 31-5-203(c) when space allows.
