Things To Do on an eBike in Orange County
Orange County is a thin two-town shop spine on the east slope. TrailLink lists Orange among Cross Vermont Trail counties on an 87.4-mile mixed-surface line from Lake Champlain to Wells River. That is a network, not a paved causeway from a Randolph card.
Shop in Randolph or Thetford Center. I-89 is a drive. Do not invent a second Island Line here.
Where to ride in Orange County
Stay on town pavement unless a current Cross Vermont segment is posted for bicycles. The Cross Vermont Trail facts block lists 87.4 miles, counties Caledonia, Chittenden, Orange, and Washington, surfaces asphalt, concrete, crushed stone, dirt, grass, and gravel. Dirt and grass miles can fall under § 1136a(e)(4) land-manager rules. This page will not sell the whole 87.4 miles as one Orange County afternoon.

Orange riding country: valley farms and an empty corridor -- not a lake causeway.
1. Randolph town pavement
Randolph is the west-county service town on this directory. Public streets, frost heaves, and US 12 traffic. Use eBike shops in Randolph. Downtown sidewalks are not trail.
2. Thetford Center town pavement
Thetford Center sits toward the Connecticut River. Town and village roads. Shop in Thetford Center if that is where you sleep. Do not treat the river as a path.
3. Cross Vermont Trail -- Orange County miles as a check, not a default
TrailLink includes Orange in the county list. Mixed surfaces include dirt and grass. Confirm the current segment map and e-bike posting before you leave pavement. Natural-surface pieces are not Class 2 by default.
4. What we are not mapping
A paved Randolph-to-Thetford rail-trail. I-89 shoulders. Unsigned App trail tread. The Toonerville Rail-Trail is a Windsor County listing at Springfield -- not this hub.
5. Crossing into Windsor or Washington
Drive. Shop the county you will actually ride. A card in Randolph is not a Montpelier path day.
Half-day and full-day eBike plans
Half day, Randolph grid (2 hours): Town streets from a Randolph card. Turn around at heavy US 12 traffic.
Half day, Thetford Center (2 hours): Village pavement only.
Full day, two-town drive: Randolph morning, drive to Thetford. Do not pedal I-89 as the connector.
Cross Vermont only if the segment is posted: Mixed surfaces. Confirm e-bike status the same day.
What not to ride
I-89 as a trail: high-speed. Drive.
Unsigned AT / hiking tread: foot trail, natural surface.
Grass and dirt Cross Vermont miles without a posting: § 1136a lets the land manager regulate those trails. A fat-tire comfort eBike does not change a closed sign.
Invented east-west paved greenways: if it is not sourced here, it is not the plan.
When to ride Orange County
May through October on town pavement. Mud season wrecks dirt Cross Vermont miles. Winter is a ski and studded-tire story unless a shop confirms otherwise. Foliage traffic on I-89 is a drive problem.
Shop hubs
Use city directories for phones and claim links. The county hub keeps every card.
Rental and tour operators
These rental or tour cards are preserved from the live directory. Call before you plan a ride day. A card is not today's inventory.

Vermont eBike rules snapshot
Vermont uses a three-class electric bicycle definition in 23 V.S.A. § 4(46): fully operable pedals, a saddle, and an electric motor of less than 750 watts. Class 1 is pedal-assist that cuts off at 20 mph. Class 2 may propel without pedaling and cuts off at 20 mph. Class 3 is pedal-assist that cuts off at 28 mph. An electric bicycle is not a motor vehicle. It is regulated under 23 V.S.A. § 1136a, not as an ATV.
Under § 1136a, operators have the rights and duties of bicyclists. Class 1-3 bikes are exempt from motor vehicle registration, inspection, and the ATV chapter. Class 3 bikes need a speedometer. A person under 16 may not operate a Class 3 bike but may ride as a passenger on a Class 3 designed for that. Manufacturers must label class, top assisted speed, and motor wattage. Tampering that changes speed capability requires a new label.
§ 1136a(e) lets an electric bicycle use places where bicycles are allowed, including highways, bike lanes, and bicycle or multiuse paths -- unless a municipality, local authority, or State agency with jurisdiction over a path prohibits Class 1 or 2 after notice and a hearing for safety or other legal obligations, or prohibits Class 3 on that path. That subsection does not apply to a trail specifically designated as nonmotorized with a natural surface made by clearing and grading native soil. The land manager of that kind of trail may regulate e-bikes separately. Posted signs beat this page. Read our Vermont eBike laws snapshot, then PeopleForBikes state laws, then the kiosk.
Randolph and Thetford Center are the two shop towns. Town pavement is the product. Cross Vermont Trail includes Orange County on an 87.4-mile mixed-surface facts block -- dirt and grass miles can be land-manager country. Confirm the current segment. I-89 is a drive, not a greenway to Montpelier or White River Junction.
The Toonerville Rail-Trail is a Windsor County Springfield listing. Do not steal that 3.2 miles of asphalt into Orange. Unsigned AT tread is foot country. Call the card in the town you will sleep in. This directory is thin -- two cities -- so treat the mechanical as scarce.
Mud wrecks dirt Cross Vermont miles. Freeze-thaw wrecks village asphalt. Section 1136a does not invent a paved east-west path this page could not source.
