Things To Do on an eBike in Franklin County
Franklin County is the northwest rail-trail county. TrailLink lists the Missisquoi Valley Rail Trail at 26.3 miles of asphalt and crushed stone from N Main St. in St. Albans to Troy St. in Richford. The Lamoille Valley Rail Trail's west end is Robin Hood Dr. in Swanton -- same county geography, different named line.
Shop in St. Albans City for the Missisquoi start. Milton sits toward Chittenden. Montgomery Center is a mountain-town pin, not the rail-trail. US 7 is a drive.
Where to ride in Franklin County
The sourced long ride is the Missisquoi Valley Rail Trail. TrailLink facts: 26.3 miles, St. Albans to Richford, asphalt and crushed stone, horseback, mountain bike, snowmobile, walking, ski. Shared. Farm flats and village crossings. Richford is the east trailhead in this county's geography; confirm current surface before you treat the whole line as one afternoon.

Franklin riding country: crushed stone through farm flats -- not a lake causeway.
1. Missisquoi Valley Rail Trail -- 26.3 miles (St. Albans to Richford)
Start from eBike shops in St. Albans City. TrailLink names N Main St. as the west end. Mixed asphalt and crushed stone. Snowmobile use is listed. A path-ready fat-tire eBike helps on stone sections.
2. Lamoille Valley Rail Trail -- Swanton west end
TrailLink lists Robin Hood Dr. in Swanton as an LVRT endpoint on the 94.3-mile line. Swanton Rec Path is a separate 1-mile gravel listing (S. River Street and Robin Hood Drive). That is a connector sketch, not a second 26-mile trail. Confirm which named line you are on before you count miles.
3. St. Albans town pavement
City streets to the Main Street trailhead. Railroad and downtown traffic. Not a waterfront causeway.
4. Milton as a south-county pin
Milton cards sit toward Chittenden. Town pavement. Do not invent a paved Missisquoi connector from Milton. Drive or ride posted local paths only.
5. Montgomery Center -- separate mountain day
Jay-area listings are not the Missisquoi. Natural-surface and mountain-road country. Shop there only if that is the trip. VT 118 is a drive.
Half-day and full-day eBike plans
Half day, St. Albans Missisquoi (2-3 hours): Main Street east on mixed stone as far as battery allows. Turn around in a village you can reverse.
Half day, town only: St. Albans pavement to the trailhead if weather is sideways.
Full day, toward Richford: 26.3 miles one way is the sourced length -- you do not have to do all of it. Carry water. Farm dogs and crossings are the social problem, not Champlain wind.
Do not: mix LVRT Swanton miles into the Missisquoi count without reading the signs.
What not to ride
US 7 as a trail to Burlington: drive into Chittenden if that is the trip.
Jay and Montgomery singletrack as the Missisquoi: posted-use, natural surface.
Snowmobile-priority windows: believe winter postings.
I-89 shoulders: not a path. A commuter-style eBike is enough for town-to-trailhead pavement, not the interstate.
When to ride Franklin County
May through October on the Missisquoi. Mud and freeze-thaw wreck stone. Winter is snowmobile country on many rail-trail miles. Wind off the lake can still hit St. Albans even though this is not the Island Line.
Shop hubs
Use city directories for phones and claim links. The county hub keeps every card.
Rental and tour operators
This county's directory is small. Open the Franklin County shop list and call. Do not assume a walk-up fleet.
Vermont eBike rules snapshot
Vermont uses a three-class electric bicycle definition in 23 V.S.A. § 4(46): fully operable pedals, a saddle, and an electric motor of less than 750 watts. Class 1 is pedal-assist that cuts off at 20 mph. Class 2 may propel without pedaling and cuts off at 20 mph. Class 3 is pedal-assist that cuts off at 28 mph. An electric bicycle is not a motor vehicle. It is regulated under 23 V.S.A. § 1136a, not as an ATV.
Under § 1136a, operators have the rights and duties of bicyclists. Class 1-3 bikes are exempt from motor vehicle registration, inspection, and the ATV chapter. Class 3 bikes need a speedometer. A person under 16 may not operate a Class 3 bike but may ride as a passenger on a Class 3 designed for that. Manufacturers must label class, top assisted speed, and motor wattage. Tampering that changes speed capability requires a new label.
§ 1136a(e) lets an electric bicycle use places where bicycles are allowed, including highways, bike lanes, and bicycle or multiuse paths -- unless a municipality, local authority, or State agency with jurisdiction over a path prohibits Class 1 or 2 after notice and a hearing for safety or other legal obligations, or prohibits Class 3 on that path. That subsection does not apply to a trail specifically designated as nonmotorized with a natural surface made by clearing and grading native soil. The land manager of that kind of trail may regulate e-bikes separately. Posted signs beat this page. Read our Vermont eBike laws snapshot, then PeopleForBikes state laws, then the kiosk.

Swanton is the LVRT west end on a different named 94.3-mile facts block. Read the kiosk so you do not mix the two mileages. The 1-mile Swanton Rec Path is a connector sketch, not a second 26-mile trail.
Milton is a south-county pin toward Chittenden -- town pavement, not a paved Missisquoi feeder. Montgomery Center is a Jay-area mountain pin. VT 118 and US 7 are drives. Farm crossings and dogs are the social problem on the Missisquoi, not Champlain causeway wind.
Call the St. Albans card. Mud and freeze-thaw wreck stone. Snowmobile-priority windows still win over class labels. If the stone is glazed, skip it and keep the mechanical in town.
