Salem is the least populous county in New Jersey and among the flattest, and that is precisely what makes it worth riding. There are almost no dedicated bike paths here. What there is instead is a dense network of farm lanes with very little traffic on them, crossing open crop ground between small old towns.

Woodstown itself is a compact old town on Salem Creek with a walkable main street, and it makes the natural base. Just outside it at Pilesgrove, Cowtown Rodeo has run weekly through the summer season since 1929 -- generally reckoned the longest-running weekly rodeo in the United States, with a large weekend market on the same site. It is an unlikely thing to find in New Jersey.

Salem and the oldest English settlement

West, Salem is the county seat and the oldest permanent English-speaking settlement in New Jersey, founded in 1675 -- before Philadelphia. The old town has a substantial stock of colonial and Federal buildings, and the Salem Oak in the Friends burial ground was for centuries one of the most famous trees in the state.

The country between Woodstown and Salem is the classic version of this county: flat lanes, open fields, and almost nothing else.

Fort Mott and the Delaware

Beyond Salem the county reaches the Delaware River at its widest, and Fort Mott State Park at Pennsville is the destination. South of Salem at Hancock's Bridge, the Hancock House is a 1734 brick house with the patterned brickwork this corner of the state is known for. Parvin State Park and the eastern edge

Southeast, on the Cumberland line near Pittsgrove, Parvin State Park is the one place in this area with woods and shade -- a dark lake ringed by pine and hardwood with quiet park roads, much of it built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s.
