It runs through oak and pine woodland on sandy ground, which is the Pine Barrens edge starting to assert itself. Nothing about it is dramatic; it is simply a good, easy, reliable seven miles.

Pitman Grove and the town

The centre of Pitman is a genuine oddity. The town grew around an 1870s Methodist camp meeting, and the Grove was laid out as narrow lanes of small cottages radiating outward from a central tabernacle. The pattern survives, the cottages are still lived in, and the tabernacle still stands.

Ride it slowly -- the lanes are narrow, residential, and not built for through traffic of any kind. Broadway, with its restored theatre, runs alongside, and Alcyon Lake sits at the edge of town.

The lake parks: Washington Lake and Scotland Run

Twenty miles west, the county meets the Delaware River, and Red Bank Battlefield at National Park borough is the most significant historic site in it. This is the site of Fort Mercer, where in October 1777 a small Continental garrison beat off a far larger Hessian assault -- one of the more lopsided American victories of the war. Glassboro, Mullica Hill, and the farm country

Glassboro next door is a university town now -- Rowan University -- but the name is literal: this was South Jersey glassmaking country, and the Heritage Glass Museum keeps that history. In 1967 the town hosted the Glassboro Summit between President Johnson and Soviet Premier Kosygin, at Hollybush on what is now the campus.

South and west, Mullica Hill is an antiques town in Harrison Township, and Swedesboro is one of the oldest settlements in the state, founded by Swedish colonists, with Trinity Old Swedes Church still standing. The lanes between them run through orchard and farm country and make the best road riding in the county.
