Things to do on an eBike in Newark, New Jersey

Newark surprises people on a bike. New Jersey's largest city is also the seat of the first county park system established in the United States, dating to 1895, and much of it was laid out by the Olmsted firm. That legacy means Newark and its immediate neighbours have an unusual density of large, well-designed parks with paved drives -- exactly the kind of riding an electric bike is good at.

The city itself is flat. Downtown, the Ironbound, and the park chain are all easy. The hills start west of town where the Watchung ridge rises, and that is a genuinely different kind of day.

Branch Brook Park is the best ride inside Newark city limits and one of the more historically significant parks in the country. It was the first county park opened for public use in the United States, laid out by the Olmsted Brothers, and it runs roughly four miles north to south along a chain of lakes with paved park drives and paths the whole way. Flat, shaded, and easy on any bike.

It also holds the largest collection of cherry blossom trees in the United States -- somewhere north of five thousand, more than Washington DC -- with an annual Cherry Blossom Festival in April. The northern end of the park has the densest planting. Expect crowds and event road closures on peak festival weekends. At the southern end, the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart is one of the largest cathedrals in North America and worth the stop.

Newark Riverfront Park and the Ironbound

For most of a century Newark had its back to the Passaic River. Newark Riverfront Park reversed that -- built on reclaimed industrial land in the Ironbound, with a paved promenade, boardwalk decking, and a distinctive orange steel walkway giving the neighbourhood direct public access to the water. The Ironbound around Ferry Street is the obvious pairing: a dense Portuguese, Brazilian, and Spanish neighbourhood with one of the better eating streets in the state. It is compact enough to ride slowly and park often.

South Mountain Reservation

West of the city, South Mountain Reservation covers over two thousand acres across Millburn, Maplewood, and West Orange on the Watchung ridge. Paved carriage roads and park drives thread mature hemlock and oak woods, with the Rahway River running through and Hemlock Falls as the set piece. It is county parkland with its own rules on electric bikes, and the trail network is separate from the paved roads. Stick to the paved surfaces unless signage says otherwise. Shops nearby: Millburn eBike shops and Maplewood.

Eagle Rock Reservation and the ridge overlook

Eagle Rock Reservation in West Orange sits at the top of the first Watchung ridge, and the overlook faces east across the whole plain toward the Manhattan skyline. There is a 9/11 memorial at the overlook, placed where a great many people stood and watched that morning. It is a short reservation but the view is the payoff for the climb.

The climb from the valley floor up to the ridge is real -- several hundred feet in a short distance on ordinary streets. On a standard bike it is a decision. On an eBike it stops being one, which is exactly what makes this county interesting for assist. A commuter eBike with genuine hill-climb torque matters more here than tire width.

Beyond Branch Brook, the county system gives you Weequahic Park in Newark's South Ward with its lake and Olmsted layout, Verona Park, Brookdale Park straddling Bloomfield and Montclair, and Watsessing Park. The Lenape Trail links a long chain of them on marked routes. Downtown, Military Park and Washington Park anchor the walk between NJPAC and the Newark Museum of Art.

Getting here and getting around

Newark Penn Station and Broad Street Station put the city on NJ Transit, Amtrak, and PATH, and the Newark Light Rail runs right through Branch Brook Park -- which makes a one-way park ride perfectly practical. Streets downtown are busy and urban; ride predictably and use the lanes where they exist.

West to South Mountain (16-24 miles): Out through the Oranges to the reservation, the carriage roads and Hemlock Falls, and back. Real elevation on the way out.

The ridge day, Eagle Rock and South Mountain (20-30 miles): Both reservations in one loop with the overlook in the middle. The county's biggest day and the one that most rewards assist. Riders doing consecutive long days sometimes keep a portable power station for eBike day trips at home for an overnight top-up.

North to Brookdale and Montclair (12-18 miles): Branch Brook north into Bloomfield, Brookdale Park, and on into Montclair. Shops at the far end: Montclair eBike shops.

How to plan a Newark riding day

1. Time it for the blossoms if you can -- early to mid April, and go on a weekday if you want the park drive to yourself.
2. Start flat. Branch Brook or the Riverfront tells you how the bike feels before you meet traffic.
3. Decide about the ridge early. The climb west is the difference between a park day and a real ride.
4. Check reservation signage. Essex County parkland sets its own electric bike rules, separate from the streets.
5. Use the light rail. A one-way park ride with a train home is an underrated Newark move.
6. Stay in the low-speed classes. New Jersey treats Class 1 and 2 like bicycles; faster machines are a different legal category.
