Laconia is not a resort village pretending to be a town -- it is a real working small city that happens to sit between three lakes. Lake Winnipesaukee is the big one, Lake Opechee sits in the middle of the city, and Lake Winnisquam lies to the southwest. That geography is the whole point of riding here.

The WOW Trail

The WOW Trail -- Winnipesaukee Opechee Winnisquam -- is the paved rail-trail built along the active railroad corridor through Laconia. It is the only serious car-free riding in the Lakes Region and it links the downtown and Lakeport areas toward the Winnisquam side.

It has been built in phases over many years, with sections completed at different times and further extensions long planned, so check which stretches are currently open rather than assuming the whole corridor is rideable end to end. Paved surface means a commuter-style eBike is all you need.

Weirs Beach and the lake

Weirs Beach is part of Laconia -- the boardwalk, the pier, the arcades, and the dock where the M/S Mount Washington excursion ship runs its Winnipesaukee routes. Riding out there from downtown is the classic short Laconia trip.

Two cautions. Lakeside Avenue and Route 3 are genuinely busy through the summer, and in June Laconia Motorcycle Week -- one of the oldest and largest national motorcycle rallies -- centres on Weirs Beach and fills every road in the area. Ride there in the morning, or ride somewhere else that week.

Gunstock and the Belknap Range

Behind Gilford next door, the Belknap Range rises straight off the lake plain. Gunstock Mountain Resort is county-owned and runs a mountain-bike trail network with lift-served riding in summer -- a managed resort with tickets, its own rules including on electric bikes, and seasonal dates.

Ellacoya State Park and the shore road

Southeast along the lake in Gilford, Ellacoya State Park is a state park beach on the southwestern shore of Winnipesaukee, looking across to the Ossipee and Sandwich mountains. The shore road out to it is the best lakeside road riding near the city, and it carries on toward Alton Bay at the southern tip of the lake.

Meredith, Belmont and the rest of the county

North around the lake, Meredith sits at the head of Meredith Bay with its own listing. South, Belmont and the Winnisquam side add another. Alton covers the bottom of the lake. Ellacoya shore road (18-26 miles): Southeast into Gilford along the lake to the state park beach, with the Belknaps on your right the whole way.

Alton Bay (34-46 miles): Carry on past Ellacoya to the southern tip of Winnipesaukee and back. The best full-day road ride in the county.

Belknap Range climb (14-22 miles): Into Gilford and up toward the state forest and the fire tower road. Short mileage, serious gradient.
