4. Up-island roads toward Aquinnah
Hills, farms, no shoulder. Ride it only if you already know rural pavement. Class labels in c. 90, § 1 do not invent a bike lane.
5. State forest dirt roads, when posted
Manuel F. Correllus State Forest. Surface and seasonal closures. DCR signs win. Not a paved rail-trail.
6. What this county is not
The Cape Cod Rail Trail is Barnstable County. Nantucket is its own county. Do not paste those onto Edgartown.

Massachusetts defines an electric bicycle in M.G.L. c. 90, § 1 as a bicycle or tricycle with fully operable pedals and an electric motor of 750 watts or less that meets Class 1 or Class 2. Class 1 assists only while you pedal and cuts off at 20 mph. Class 2 may propel without pedaling and cannot assist above 20 mph. The statute does not define a Class 3 electric bicycle. A 28 mph machine is not automatically an e-bike here.
M.G.L. c. 85, § 11B gives a bicycle operator the right to use public ways except limited-access highways posted against bicycles, and it requires a helmet for anyone 16 or younger on a public way, bike path, or other public right-of-way.
