Ernie's Cycle Shop
Bike shop, repair and e-bike service · Conant Street, Westbrook, ME
Ernie's Cycle Shop at 105 Conant Street in Westbrook calls itself the oldest continuous bike shop in Maine. It opened in 1952, moved to its current building in 1972, and today posts clear tune-up rates for everything from single speeds to electric trikes, sells new and pre-loved bikes, and helps run Westbrook's annual BikeFest.
Seventy years of Ernie's
The story starts at a Rotary Club meeting, where a hardware store owner complained that on Saturday mornings everyone brought bikes in for repair when he just wanted to sell lawn mowers. He asked, half-heartedly, if anyone wanted to buy a bike shop, and Ernie Weidman said he did. Ernie's Cycle Shop opened in 1952 at Rochester and Forest Streets, growing from a shed to a one-car garage to a three-car garage.
When the Westbrook Arterial turned Rochester Street into a dead end, the shop moved in 1972 to its current building on what was then Route 25. Two years later that stretch of Conant Street was bypassed, which is why the shop now sits on a quiet street where customers can test ride without traffic. The building itself was once part of the Conant family farm stand, and Ellie Saunders (Conant) later donated 5.5 acres behind the shop to Portland Trails, giving riders trail access to the river.
Tune-up rates
Tune-ups are priced by bike type: $80 for a single speed, $90 for BMX, $95 for a bike with no suspension, $110 with front suspension and $120 with full suspension. Adult trikes, tandems and electric bikes or scooters are $140, and electric trikes $170. An overhaul that repacks or replaces all bearings is $270 plus parts and the regular tune rate.
Each tune includes a quick clean, wheel truing, bearing adjustments, torque on every bolt, lubrication, brake and shifting adjustment and a test ride. On full suspension bikes the shock comes off to check pivot bearings. Estimates are free. The shop also repairs fitness equipment at $85 per hour, and on-site or delivery service in greater Portland is $55.
BikeFest and the community
Ernie's sponsors Westbrook's BikeFest. The 2026 edition is Saturday, October 3, from noon to 6 PM at Quarryside at Rock Row, with road and mountain group rides, an e-bike demo from the Bicycle Coalition of Maine, a slow race, live music and food trucks. The shop also supports the Westbrook Bicycle Project and sells pre-loved bikes. Its mission line: Life's a cycle, we hope you're enjoying the ride.
