Louisiana eBike rules snapshot

Louisiana uses three electric-assisted bicycle classes. La. R.S. 32:1(25) defines an electric-assisted bicycle as a bicycle with fully operable pedals and a motor under 750 watts that fits Class one (pedal-assist that stops at 20 mph), Class two (a motor that may propel without pedaling, not capable of assistance at 20 mph), or Class three (pedal-assist that stops at 28 mph). A matching machine is a bicycle under 32:1(7).

La. R.S. 32:204 gives that rider bicycle rights and duties. After August 1, 2020 a manufacturer label shows class, top-assisted speed, and wattage. You may ride where bicycles are allowed unless a local municipal or parish authority or a state agency posts a path off-limits -- Class one and two only after notice and a public hearing for safety or other legal obligations; Class three may be banned on a shared-use trail or bicycle path without that hearing. Natural-surface nonmotorized trails of native soil are a land-manager question under 32:204(F)(3). No person under 12 shall operate a Class three.
