Where riders actually ride in Maui County

Keep this directory for finding shops and keep the Maui County Things To Do guide for ride planning. The routes below come from the Maui Bicycling League route pages, and each one should be checked against the current page and posted signs before you head out.

South Maui Greenway, Kihei. The Maui Bicycling League describes a flat greenway along Liloa St. with nighttime lighting between Kihei Regional Park and Lokelani Intermediate School on one end and E. Waipuilani Rd. on the other. It is less than 1 mile long and is listed as suitable for families and beginners. That makes it a reasonable first outing for someone testing a rental bike, but it is a short path, not a full day.

Polo Beach toward Ahihi-Kinau. The league lists a ride of about 10 miles out and back from Polo Beach Park along Makena Road toward the Ahihi Kinau Preserve and La Perouse. The road becomes bumpy, and the league notes that road bikes may want to turn around earlier.

Kihei to Wailuku loop. The league describes a loop that uses North Kihei Road past Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge, Honoapiilani Highway toward Wailuku, then Maui Lani Parkway, Kuihelani, Puunene, and Mokulele Highway, joining the Mokulele Bike Path back to North Kihei Road. It mixes road riding with a bike path, so read the full description before you commit to it.

Lahaina to Kapalua. The league lists a road loop of about 25 miles using Honoapiilani Highway and Lower Honoapiilani Road through Kapalua, Napili, and Honokowai.

West Maui Greenway. The league describes this as a project in progress. Parts may be bikeable, but do not treat it as a completed long paved trail.

Paia, Haiku, and Makawao. These areas are generally ridden on roads with hills, narrow shoulders, and tourist traffic. We did not verify a dedicated paved county greenway for a Paia to Haiku path.

Haleakala and Hana Highway. Both are popular for scenic, hard climbing, or remote road riding. Park and highway rules, weather, and closures change. We found no specific e-bike allowance for Haleakala summit trails, so check NPS Haleakala and posted signs rather than assuming.

Nā Ala Hele trails. The DLNR Nā Ala Hele Maui trail list includes Lahaina Pali Trail, Waiheʻe Ridge Trail, Hoapili Trail, the Kahakapao loops, and the Polipoli and Redwood network. Minutes from the May 6, 2026 Maui Nā Ala Hele Advisory Council meeting record a discussion of e-bike regulations on these trails, with no change to DLNR policy recommended (meeting minutes PDF). Treat hiking-oriented trails as not default e-bike routes unless a specific trail page allows bikes.

eBike rules in Hawaii

Hawaii now has statewide eBike rules under Act 259 (HB 2021, 2026). Hawaii DOT says the law requires proper registration, with penalties for failing to comply, and the law took effect when the Governor signed it on July 15, 2026. A violation of Act 259 is a traffic infraction.

Electric devices over 750 watts or capable of more than 28 mph are banned on public roadways, bicycle lanes, travel paths, bicycle facilities, and other public areas such as sidewalks. Do not assume a Surron-style or other high-speed machine has bicycle access. Act 259 also requires manufacturers and distributors to permanently affix a label to each eBike showing its classification number, top assisted speed, and motor wattage. Check that label before you buy or ride, and ask a rental shop which class and speed your bike carries.

HB 2021 amends HRS 291C-145(g) so that Class 1 and Class 2 eBikes may be ridden on sidewalks at not more than 10 mph, except in business districts or where a county ordinance prohibits it. Class 3 eBikes may not be ridden on sidewalks. Maui County may add local ordinances, so check county rules and signs.

The bill also prohibits anyone under 16 from operating a Class 3 eBike and authorizes people under 14 to operate Class 2 eBikes under supervision. It requires helmets for people under 18 operating a bicycle or electric foot scooter. The helmet wording is written for electric foot scooters and micro-mobility devices, so check how it applies to your eBike.

We could not confirm a license or insurance requirement for eBikes in the official sources we reviewed, so check with Hawaii DOT and your county before you ride.
