Things To Do on an eBike in Sussex County
Sussex County is the Delaware beaches: flat coastal plain, towns close enough to link on one battery, and the Junction and Breakwater Trail running about six car-free miles between Rehoboth Beach and Lewes. Cape Henlopen State Park adds the Gordons Pond marsh boardwalk to the north. The barrier spit runs south through Delaware Seashore State Park to Bethany and Fenwick Island.

Where to ride in Sussex County
Three stretches. North: Lewes, Cape Henlopen State Park, and the Gordons Pond Trail. Middle: Rehoboth Beach, the Junction and Breakwater Trail, and Dewey Beach. South: the barrier spit through Delaware Seashore State Park to the Indian River Inlet, then Bethany Beach and Fenwick Island. Parking between Memorial Day and Labor Day is bad enough that a bike is genuinely faster than a car for most of what you actually want to do.
Sussex riding country: crushed-stone rail-trail and pine -- not I-95 and not Wilmington.
1. Junction and Breakwater Trail -- about 6 miles one way (Rehoboth Beach to Lewes)
The marquee ride of the Delaware beaches. Old Penn Central rail bed between Rehoboth Beach and Lewes, crossing farm fields, pine woods, and marsh on wooden bridges, separated from traffic almost the whole way. About twelve miles round trip. Surface is packed crushed stone, not asphalt. It rides fine on wider tires and feels loose on skinny ones, and it softens after heavy rain. Start from eBike shops in Rehoboth Beach or eBike shops in Lewes. A path-ready fat-tire eBike matches crushed stone -- equipment, not a shop keyword.
2. Gordons Pond Trail, Cape Henlopen State Park -- about 3 miles one way
The most scenic stretch in the county. Packed surface and long elevated boardwalk over the marsh, pond on one side and dunes on the other, WWII observation towers on the horizon. Narrow and heavily walked. Ride slow. Confirm current Delaware State Parks electric bicycle rules. 21 Del. C. § 4198P(g) still lets the agency restrict paths.
3. Cape Henlopen State Park loop and the point -- 8 to 14 miles
The headland where the Atlantic meets Delaware Bay: pine forest, dunes, Fort Miles, the fishing pier, and paved park roads toward the point. Combine park roads with Gordons Pond and a run into Lewes for the best full day in southern Delaware.
4. Lewes town and the canal -- 4 to 8 miles
Second Street shops, the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal, Lewes Beach on the bay side, and the Cape May-Lewes Ferry terminal. Flat, compact, slow-paced. The natural lunch stop at the north end of the trail.
5. Dewey Beach to the Indian River Inlet -- 10 to 18 miles
South from Rehoboth, Dewey Beach sits on a strip narrow enough to see ocean and Rehoboth Bay at the same time. Keep going into Delaware Seashore State Park down the barrier spit to the Indian River Inlet, where the bridge carries a separated bike and pedestrian path. Flat, exposed, and windy -- the return leg is where assist pays for itself. Shops: eBike shops in Dewey Beach.
6. Bethany Beach, Ocean View, and Fenwick Island -- 8 to 16 miles
The quieter southern end. Bethany has its own boardwalk with its own posted cycling hours. Ocean View and Millville sit inland. Fenwick Island runs to the Maryland line. Less crowded than Rehoboth in July. Shops: Bethany Beach and Fenwick Island.
Half-day and full-day eBike plans
Half day, the classic (3 hours): Rent in Rehoboth, ride the Junction and Breakwater Trail to Lewes, eat on Second Street, trail back. Twelve miles, car-free.
Half day, the scenic one: North into Cape Henlopen, out toward the point and Fort Miles, back along Gordons Pond. Ten to fourteen miles.
Full day, the northern loop (4-6 hours): Trail to Lewes in the morning, Cape Henlopen and Gordons Pond in the afternoon, back into Rehoboth.
Do not: treat I-95 as the eBike connector to Wilmington. The Markell Trail is New Castle County. Drive.
What not to ride
Rehoboth Beach and Bethany Beach boardwalks outside posted hours: both towns allow bicycles only during an early-morning window in season. Hours and season dates are set by each town and get adjusted. Check the posted rule the day you ride. Outside the window, walk the bike or ride a block inland.
Gordons Pond at speed: narrow, heavily walked boardwalk.

When to ride Sussex County
April through November. May, September, and October are the best weeks: the trail is quieter, the towns are open, humidity breaks, and boardwalk restrictions ease outside the summer season. July and August are ridable but plan on early mornings -- the trail gets busy and the towns get impossible. Winter riding is fine on clear days, though the exposed barrier-spit sections are cold and windy.

Delaware eBike rules snapshot
Delaware uses a three-class electric bicycle definition in 21 Del. C. § 101: a bicycle with fully operable pedals, a saddle or seat, and an electric motor of 750 watts or less. Class 1 is pedal-assist that cuts off at 20 mph. Class 2 may propel without pedaling and cuts off at 20 mph. Class 3 is pedal-assist that cuts off at 28 mph.
Under 21 Del. C. § 4198P, an electric bicycle operator has the rights and duties of a bicyclist and is not subject to financial responsibility, driver's licenses, registration, certificates of title, off-highway vehicles, or license plates. Manufacturers must affix a class, top assisted speed, and motor-wattage label (Arial, at least 9-point) on and after January 1, 2023. Do not modify speed capability without replacing that label. The motor must disengage when you stop pedaling or apply the brakes. Class 3 bikes need a speedometer. No person under 16 may operate Class 3. Class 3 operators and passengers must wear an approved bicycle helmet under § 4198K.
§ 4198P(g) is the path rule: an electric bicycle may be ridden where bicycles are allowed, including streets, bicycle lanes, and multi-use paths, except (1) a local authority or state agency may prohibit bicycles on a path after notice and a public hearing for safety or other legal reasons, (2) a local authority or state agency may prohibit electric bicycles on a trail specifically designated as nonmotorized with a natural surface of cleared native soil and no added surfacing, and (3) you may not use the electric motor on sidewalks, including sidewalks that allow bicycles.
