Where to ride in New Haven County

Canal north. Harbor south. Ridge if you want a climb. The Farmington Canal Heritage Trail is the paved spine from New Haven toward Cheshire. East Rock and Sleeping Giant are park roads. Lighthouse Point is the harbor loop. Shoreline towns are public road. Hartford County owns the canal farther north.

New Haven riding country: canal path and harbor -- not the Housatonic river road and not the Air Line in Windham.

1. Farmington Canal Heritage Trail, New Haven to Cheshire -- about 15 miles one way

The county marquee. Paved, car-free in built segments. Class 1 and 2 are the path classes. Class 3 stays off under § 14-289k(c). Start from eBike shops in New Haven or Cheshire.

2. East Rock Park summit road -- 8 to 12 miles from downtown

Park road to the overlook. Climb. City park rules. Walk if the last pitch is posted closed to bikes.

3. Lighthouse Point Park and the harbor -- 10 to 16 miles

Harbor park, lighthouse, mixed traffic getting there. City park hours. Not a trail.

4. Downtown New Haven and the Green -- 2 to 5 miles

Checkout loop. Yield. Sidewalks are not a Class 3 cut-through.

5. Sleeping Giant and the Hamden ridge -- 12 to 20 miles

State park ridge. Park roads and a lot of hiking trail you will not ride. § 14-289k(d) plus park signs. Shops: eBike shops in Hamden.

6. Shoreline east and west -- 10 to 25 miles

Branford, Guilford, Milford. Public road along the Sound. Separate day from the canal. Shops: eBike shops in Branford or Milford.

Sleeping Giant hiking trails: walk them. Park the bike.

Downtown sidewalks as a default motor cut-through: yield and dismount where posted.

When to ride New Haven County

April through November is usable. May and October are the canal months. Summer works early on the harbor; midday downtown is hot. Foliage on East Rock is October. Winter riding is possible on cleared canal; ice in cuts is the hazard.

Connecticut eBike rules snapshot

Connecticut defines three classes of electric bicycle in Conn. Gen. Stat. § 14-1. Class 1 is pedal-assist that disengages when you stop pedaling or the bike reaches 20 mph. Class 2 may propel without pedaling and disengages when the brakes are applied or the bike reaches 20 mph. Class 3 is pedal-assist that disengages at 28 mph.

Conn. Gen. Stat. § 14-289k gives electric bicycle riders the same rights and duties as bicycle riders. An electric bicycle may be ridden where bicycles are permitted, except as this section or a local ordinance says otherwise. Class 3 shall not be ridden on a bicycle trail or path or multiuse trail or path. Class 1 and Class 2 shall not be ridden on a natural-surface nonmotorized trail or path (cleared and graded soil, no added surfacing) unless a local ordinance permits it. No person under 16 may ride Class 3; a passenger under 16 is allowed only if the bike is designed to carry one. Every rider and passenger on an electric bicycle must wear protective headgear that meets ANSI, CPSC, ASTM, or Snell bicycle-helmet specs. Police, firefighters, and EMTs on duty are excepted from the path rules in subsections (b) through (d).
