Where to ride in Hartford County

Canal west and north. River downtown. Greenway east. Ridge if you want hills. Confirm current canal surface and closures on the land-manager page. Class 3 is banned on bicycle and multiuse paths statewide under Conn. Gen. Stat. § 14-289k(c).

Hartford riding country: canal path and river city -- not the Sound and not the Air Line Trail.

1. Farmington Canal Heritage Trail -- 50-plus miles in Connecticut

The statewide marquee, and Hartford County owns a long paved share. Simsbury, Avon, Farmington, and north toward the Massachusetts line. Car-free in built segments. Class 1 and 2 are the path classes; Class 3 is off the path under § 14-289k(c). Start from eBike shops in Farmington or Simsbury.

2. Connecticut River Riverwalk, Hartford and East Hartford -- 4 to 7 mile loop

Downtown river. Flat, mixed with walkers. Good checkout. Shops: eBike shops in Hartford.

3. Charter Oak Greenway east to Manchester -- 12 to 20 miles round trip

East-side paved corridor. Confirm open segments. Shops: eBike shops in Manchester.

4. Elizabeth Park and the West End -- 6 to 10 miles

Rose garden, park roads, West Hartford edge. City park rules. Shops: eBike shops in West Hartford.

5. Bushnell Park and the downtown core -- 2 to 4 miles

In-town loop. Yield. Not a trail day.

6. Talcott Mountain ridge climb -- 10 to 18 miles

Road climb, not a path. Heublein Tower is the view if you walk the last bit as posted. Public road. Assist earns its keep.

Class 3 on the Farmington Canal: § 14-289k(c). Statewide path ban.

When to ride Hartford County

April through November is usable. May and October are the canal months. Summer works early; midday downtown is hot pavement. Foliage on Talcott is October. Winter riding is possible on cleared canal; ice in the cuts is the hazard. After snow, wait for the trail towns.

Connecticut eBike rules snapshot

Connecticut defines three classes of electric bicycle in Conn. Gen. Stat. § 14-1. Class 1 is pedal-assist that disengages when you stop pedaling or the bike reaches 20 mph. Class 2 may propel without pedaling and disengages when the brakes are applied or the bike reaches 20 mph. Class 3 is pedal-assist that disengages at 28 mph.

Conn. Gen. Stat. § 14-289k gives electric bicycle riders the same rights and duties as bicycle riders. An electric bicycle may be ridden where bicycles are permitted, except as this section or a local ordinance says otherwise. Class 3 shall not be ridden on a bicycle trail or path or multiuse trail or path. Class 1 and Class 2 shall not be ridden on a natural-surface nonmotorized trail or path (cleared and graded soil, no added surfacing) unless a local ordinance permits it. No person under 16 may ride Class 3; a passenger under 16 is allowed only if the bike is designed to carry one. Every rider and passenger on an electric bicycle must wear protective headgear that meets ANSI, CPSC, ASTM, or Snell bicycle-helmet specs. Police, firefighters, and EMTs on duty are excepted from the path rules in subsections (b) through (d).

The Charter Oak Greenway runs east toward Manchester. It is not the canal. The Riverwalk, Bushnell Park, and Elizabeth Park are the city checkout. Talcott Mountain is a public-road climb, not a closed greenway.

Sherwood Island is Fairfield County. The Air Line Trail's Quiet Corner miles are Windham County. Shop in Hartford, West Hartford, or Farmington for the spine you will actually ride. Call the card.

Helmets under § 14-289k(f) apply on the canal and downtown. Under 16 may not operate Class 3. After snow, wait for the trail towns to clear the cuts.
