Where to ride in Maricopa County

SRP canals are service paths with gates and local rules. McDowell Sonoran Preserve singletrack is not an eBike default. The Chuck Huckelberry Loop is Pima County.

1. Indian Bend Wash Greenbelt, Scottsdale
The county marquee. Paved floodway parks, lakes, and a long north-south spine. Class 1 and 2 are the usual path classes under § 28-819(D) unless Scottsdale posts otherwise. Start from eBike shops in Scottsdale. A path-ready fat-tire eBike is equipment, not a shop keyword.
2. Tempe Town Lake loop
Flat waterfront pavement. Crowded on weekends. Yield. Shops: eBike shops in Tempe.
3. Rio Salado Pathway along the Salt River
Phoenix and Tempe river-edge path. Surface and closures change with water and construction. Confirm the live city page.
4. SRP canal trails and the Sun Circle Trail
Canal banks are not a closed greenway. Gates, maintenance, and local path rules. Ride open paved segments. Do not treat a canal map as as-built inventory through every gap. Shops: eBike shops in Phoenix or Mesa.
5. Maricopa Trail and the regional parks
A regional trail concept with mixed surfaces. Regional parks often ban or restrict e-bikes on natural-surface trails. Read the park kiosk. § 28-819 does not rewrite a preserve rule.
6. McDowell Sonoran Preserve: the one to skip
Desert preserve singletrack. Not a multiuse canal. Stay off unless a posted route explicitly allows your class. This is the Valley's most common eBike mistake.
Half-day and full-day eBike plans
Half day, the wash (2-3 hours): Indian Bend Wash out-and-back from a Scottsdale shop. Dawn in summer. That is the signature Valley day.
Half day, the lake: Tempe Town Lake and a Rio Salado connector if open.
Full day: Wash in the morning, lake after a shop stop. Do not add McDowell singletrack.
Do not: treat I-10 as the eBike connector to Tucson. The Loop is Pima County. Drive.
What not to ride
McDowell Sonoran Preserve singletrack: preserve rules, not a path permit.
Class 3 on a bicycle or multiuse path unless adjacent to a roadway or posted allowed: § 28-819(E).

When to ride Maricopa County

Arizona eBike rules snapshot
Arizona defines an electric bicycle in A.R.S. § 28-101 as a bicycle or tricycle with fully operable pedals and an electric motor of less than 750 watts that meets one of three classes. Class 1 assists only while you pedal and cuts off at 20 mph. Class 2 may propel without pedaling and cannot assist above 20 mph. Class 3 assists only while you pedal and cuts off at 28 mph.
A.R.S. § 28-819 gives an electric bicycle operator the rights and duties of a person riding a bicycle. An e-bike is not subject to title, registration, vehicle license tax, driver licenses, or vehicle insurance. Beginning January 1, 2019, manufacturers and distributors must affix a permanent label with classification, top assisted speed, and motor wattage in at least nine-point type.
Class 1 and Class 2 may be used on bicycle and multiuse paths unless a local authority or state agency with jurisdiction prohibits them. Class 3 may not be operated on a bicycle or multiuse path unless the path is within or adjacent to a highway or roadway, or the local authority or agency allows it.
