211 miles of red rock, most of it currently off-limits to e-bikes -- until next spring.

Moab has quietly been one of the toughest e-bike towns in the country -- incredible terrain, a lot of it closed to anything with a motor. That's about to change. Land managers have approved roughly 211 additional miles of trail for e-bike use around Grand County, with the new access expected to open in spring 2027.

What's actually opening

The approval covers trail that's been mechanized-only (pedal, no motor) for years, much of it woven through the same red-rock terrain that made Moab famous for mountain biking. Once it opens, it roughly doubles the e-bike-legal riding around town -- turning a place riders currently visit for a handful of specific trails into a place they can plan a full multi-day e-bike trip around.

The timeline runs into next spring, so this isn't a "book your flight" moment yet. But trail approvals like this rarely reverse, and the planning window is the time to start figuring out logistics -- lodging fills up fast in Moab's shoulder seasons.

Where to ride in Moab right now

You don't have to wait for the expansion to ride an e-bike in Moab. The Moab Brand Trails, just north of town, are already e-bike friendly and a good starting point -- the Bar M loop in particular is a forgiving, well-marked intro to the terrain before you graduate to bigger days. Pair it with the Colorado Riverway Scenic Byway for an easy recovery ride, or swing out to the Dead Horse Point State Park overlook for the view that sells everyone on this place.

Ride window matters here more than almost anywhere else in the country: March through May and September through November are the sweet spots. Summer midday heat in Moab isn't an inconvenience, it's a real risk -- plan rides for early morning if you're visiting June through August.
