Bend and Tahoe Just Opened 273 Miles of Trail to E-Bikes -- Here's the Map
Two of the West's best riding towns just got a lot more e-bike-friendly, at the same time.
Bend, Oregon and the Lake Tahoe basin don't usually make the same headline, but they did this month -- a combined 273 miles of trail across the two destinations have opened up to e-bikes, according to Singletracks Mountain Bike News. If either was on your list before, it just got a lot more useful.
Why two mountain towns opened up at once
Both areas have spent years balancing traditional mountain-bike access against e-bike demand, usually landing on partial or trail-by-trail rules. This expansion is bigger than the usual incremental opening -- it's a real jump in rideable mileage in two of the most-searched mountain-bike destinations in the country, which matters if you've been planning a trip around what your bike can actually access.
It doesn't mean every trail in either area is now open -- always check current signage and trail-specific rules before you ride, since access still varies by segment. But the direction is clear: both towns are leaning into e-bike tourism, not away from it.
Where to start riding
In Bend, the Phil's Trail Complex west of town is the classic starting point -- a sprawling singletrack network through open ponderosa pine, with enough mileage to fill several days. Pair a hard day there with an easy spin on the paved Deschutes River Trail, or just wander the Old Mill District when your legs need a break.
On the Tahoe side, South Lake Tahoe's Pope-Baldwin Bike Path is the easiest entry point -- a flat path linking the area's beaches and meadows at 6,200-plus feet, which means thinner air and a bigger payoff than the mileage suggests. Ride to the Emerald Bay overlook at least once; it's the view every Tahoe trip photo is trying to recreate. Summer and early fall are the windows here, once the snow has cleared.
